Niko Jenjic, a winner at the 2023 Irish Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards, believes the recognition was a "big help" for his career and has urged people within the industry to submit nominations for this year's awards before Tuesday's 5pm deadline.

Jenjic, who was recognised for his work as travelling head lad to Mick Halford and Tracey Collins, has begun a new chapter as assistant trainer to Ross O'Sullivan.

Group 1 and Royal Ascot-winning trainer Halford announced his retirement last month and Jenjic believes the recognition associated with the award enhanced his reputation and ensured he was not short on options when seeking a new role.

"I sent the last horse from Michael's last Friday week – it was an ex-Aga Khan horse and he was heading to Hungary," he said. "I'm starting a new chapter with Ross. He's doing really well and getting bigger.

"The day Michael announced he wasn't renewing the licence, I met Ross at the Goffs sales and he mentioned it.

"The awards are great for all staff and it's important for the whole industry to support it as it's hard to get people involved, particularly young people. It's really special.

"Awards like this really help you. I had six or seven people ring me after Michael's announcement and I think winning the award was a big help that way."

Jenjic has already nominated a member of the O'Sullivan yard for the Godolphin-backed awards and encourages those in the industry to get their submissions in before the deadline.

He added: "It's very nice to get the recognition. I was with Michael for over nine years. It's nice to nominate a colleague as it shows to them that you think they're doing a good job and they're appreciated."
