PSG vs Liverpool predictions

After finishing top of the standings in the new-look Champions League, Liverpool might have been expecting a relatively soft last-16 tie.

Instead, the Reds have been drawn against a resurgent Paris St-Germain side whose recent European feats include a 4-2 victory over Manchester City and a 10-0 aggregate rout of Brest in the playoff round.

It promises to be a fascinating tie and a high-scoring draw could be the best bet when Arne Slot's men travel to Paris for the first leg.

The last-16 rivals had contrasting experiences in the league phase of the tournament. Liverpool, the runaway Premier League leaders, won their first seven matches before a 3-2 defeat to PSV Eindhoven with a second-string side on matchday eight.

PSG were big drifters in the betting after the league fixtures were announced and that market move was vindicated by their poor start to the competition.

An unconvincing 1-0 home win over Girona was followed by defeats to Arsenal, Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich and a 1-1 draw with PSV in their next four fixtures.

Luis Enrique's men clearly needed time to come to terms with the departure of star forward Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid but PSG clicked into gear with a 3-0 win at Salzburg on matchday six.

Their matchday-seven comeback against Manchester City was a pivotal moment for the French champions, who trailed 2-0 until the 56th minute of their 4-2 win.

PSG were good value for their victory, winning the shot count 26-9 and hitting the woodwork twice, although Slot's Liverpool are nowhere near as flaky as Pep Guardiola's City have so often been this season.

Both clubs have 13-point leads in their domestic leagues so there should be no distraction as they chase European glory.

The Anfield factor may well be on PSG's minds and they will be desperate to take a lead to Merseyside, where Liverpool thrashed German champions Bayer Leverkusen 4-0 and defeated holders Real Madrid 2-0 during the league phase.

In-form PSG forwards such as Ousmane Dembele, Bradley Barcola and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia – a reported transfer target for Liverpool before his January move from Napoli – should trouble the Reds, particularly in wide areas.

Two of Liverpool's last three Premier League away games, at Everton and Aston Villa, ended 2-2 while they also had score draws at top-six rivals Arsenal, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle.

That looks a decent betting option against a PSG side who have kept only one clean sheet, against mid-table Toulouse, in their last ten league matches.
