Bayern Munich vs Bayer Leverkusen predictions

Bayer Leverkusen were probably one of the last teams Bayern Munich wanted to come up against in the last 16 of the Champions League and Vincent Kompany's men could be pushed to their limits in the first leg at the Allianz Arena.

Having dethroned Bayern as Bundesliga champions last season, Leverkusen have become a thorn in the side of the Bavarians and they should be in confident mood as the German titans prepare to meet in Europe for the first time.

Leverkusen are unbeaten in their last six meetings with Bayern Munich, winning one and drawing two of their three encounters this campaign.

And to get an idea of how this match might pan out, punters need look no further than February's 0-0 draw at the BayArena.

Although it finished goalless, Leverkusen dominated, denying Bayern a single shot on target.

Bayern's expected-goals figure stood at a paltry 0.14 as Leverkusen repelled their opponents with a well-organised, high-pressing approach.

Jamal Musiala was left isolated and unable to create thanks to some tight man-marking from Jonathan Tah and Xabi Alonso masterfully created uneven matchups across the pitch.

Even with the prolific Harry Kane leading the line, Bayern Munich were stumped and they have scored just twice in their last four matches against Bayer Leverkusen.

But Leverkusen are not the only side to have stifled Bayern this campaign as Kompany's men have lost 1-0 to Aston Villa, 4-1 to Barcelona and 3-0 to Feyenoord in the league phase of the Champions League.

That meant they had to battle through the knockout round playoffs and they needed a 94th-minute strike from Alphonso Davies in the second leg to edge past Celtic.

They are on course to regain their Bundesliga crown but they have often underwhelmed when the pressure is on and they may struggle to establish a first-leg advantage in Munich.

Leverkusen secured passage directly into the last 16 of this competition thanks to their sixth-place finish and, of the teams left, only Inter and the Premier League trio of Arsenal, Liverpool and Aston Villa have leaked fewer goals in this season's competition.

For punters reluctant to settle on a result, under 1.5 Bayern Munich goals is a sensible betting approach, while a bet on Leverkusen to avoid defeat against Bayern for the seventh time in a row also appeals.
